Classe 1982, tre album all´attivo (“Rest Now, Weary Head! You Will Get Well Soon”, “Vexations”, “The Scarlet Beast O´Seven Heads”), una quantitá di EPs, colonne sonore, produzioni e collaborazioni. Konstantin Gropper, meglio conosciuto con il nome del suo progetto musicale, Get Well Soon, ha evidentemente messo bene a frutto gli insegnamenti che il padre insegnante di musica gli ha impartito fin da giovanissima età. Oggi è di sicuro uno dei musicisti più interessanti del panorama musicale tedesco e non solo. DLSO ha avuto il piacere di intervistarlo in occasione dell´uscita dei suoi tre EPs “The Lufthansa Heist”, “Henry” e “Greatest Hits”, tutti pubblicati lo scorso Novembre. Un artista a tutto tondo la cui disponibilitá, cultura, senso dell´umorismo e simpatia hanno messo chi scrive di nuovo in pace con il mondo musicale. C´è ancora speranza, dopotutto… A voi il resoconto della chiacchierata:
Andiamo subito al punto. Pensi che i tuoi ultimi tre EP si possano vedere come una specie di valvola di sfogo creativo, un modo per creare in maniera più libera rispetto alla concentrazione che i tuoi ultimi lavori hanno richiesto? Un modo di andare verso degli estremi senza curarti di una certa coerenza di approccio?
È possibile. Penso che gli EP siano un buon modo per sperimentare. Come se fossero dei cortometraggi. Ma non è questo il motivo per cui li ho realizzati. Da tempo avevo in mente di realizzare questi progetti ma sapevo che non si prestavano al formato di un album intero dal momento che nessuno di esso rappresenta la direzione definitiva verso la quale Get Well Soon sta andando. Non sono un passo in avanti ma piuttosto uno di lato. Servono ad allargare l´immagine, non rappresentano uno sviluppo.
Chiaramente i tre EP sono stilisticamente distinti tra di loro. C´è quello chitarristico, dichiaratamente rock, quello di ispirazione letteraria, riflessivo ed etereo e quello che include le tue cover versions tra le quali hai anche scelto dei temi da colonna sonora. In un certo senso sembrano riflettere i tuoi più grossi interessi extra-musicali, ovvero la letteratura ed il cinema. Quale di queste tre forme d´arte é stata la prima ad affascinarti quando eri più giovane?
Sono sempre stato affascinato dal cinema. Non sono mai stato un gran lettore da giovane. A dire il vero non lo sono nemmeno adesso, visto che ci sono persone che leggono libri da mille pagine in una settimana. Io non ci riuscirei mai. Per cui mi reputo un patito di cinema. Leggere per me è piú una cosa “professionale”. Quando prendo in mano un libro è perché sono in cerca di ispirazione. Non lo faccio per svago.
Non sei nuovo agli esperimenti di cover versions. La tua rilettura abbastanza radicale di “Born Slippy” era contenuta già nel tuo primo album. Di definiresti un consumatore onnivoro di musica di tipo ossessivo?
L´hai espresso bene. È proprio così che mi piace pensare di me stesso. Sono sempre alla ricerca di nuova musica. Classica, folklore, pop. E penso di essere diventato ancora più aperto di quanto lo sia mai stato in passato. Posso rimanere affascinato da una canzone, un suono o un idea in qualsiasi contesto musicale. Alcuni anni fa non mi sarei nemmeno avvicinato a certi generi. Ma credo che questo abbia a che fare con un processo di maturità. Quando sei giovane difendi la tua “scena” come se fosse il Santo Graal. Ora trovo eccitante ascoltare di tutto ed a volte accorgermi che questo sia meglio di quanto immaginato, o molto peggio (succede anche questo a volte). Questo significa che con Get Well Soon potrebbe succedere di tutto in futuro.
Tornando a parlare del tuo fascino per il cinema e le colonne sonore. Ho l´impressione che tu abbia cominciato ad esperimentare più decisamente in quella direzione dopo l´uscita del tuo primo album. Ci ho visto giusto? È successo perché hai cominciato ad avere accesso a risorse maggiori a disposizione?
Le colonne sonore sono sempre state una delle mie principali influenze. Anche nel primo album direi che quell´influsso è onnipresente. Naturalmente dopo di quello mi sono buttato a capofitto nelle cose orchestrali e sicuramente le strutture che ho avuto da quel punto a disposizione ne sono la ragione. Dopo aver realizzato il mio primo album in maniera minimale nella mia camera da letto sono stato più che entusiasta di poter registrare un vero e proprio gruppo di musicisti in uno studio. Di quel “muro di suono” ne ho veramente approfittato. Infatti l´ultimo album è quello che dal cinema è stato maggiormente influenzato.
A proposito di questo. Non è un mistero che tu sia un grande fan di Ennio Morricone ed altri compositori italiani. Come li hai scoperti?
Ascoltavo Morricone già da bambino. Mia madre mi regalò la colonna sonora di “C´era una volta il West”. Penso sia stato il mio primo disco e ancora oggi non mi sono stancato di ascoltarlo. È ancora uno dei miei preferiti. Dopo di quello sono andato alla scoperta di tutti gli altri grandi come Ortolani e Umiliani. Amo quel suono. Dolce amaro, tragico, esagerato e pieno di umorismo. È proprio quello che fa per me.
L a canzone “Busy Hope” contenuta nella colonna sonora di “Palermo Shooting” di Wim Wnders è forse la più morriconiana del tuo repertorio. Come sei riuscito ad ottenere quel tipo di effetto “pelle d´oca” che la musica del maestro non manca mai di creare? C`è una qualche particolare progressione d´accordi magica che potresti consigliare ai nostri lettori più musicali?
Ti ringrazio. E per questo tutto il merito va naturalmente al maestro. So esattamente cosa intendi con “armonie da pelle d´oca”. Ovviamente lui ha influenzato la mia comprensione delle armonie. Ti posso solo dire che non sono mai complicate da ottenere e sempre molto caratteristiche. Un Morricone è sempre un Morricone. Sembrerá stupido da dire ma, per me, questo tipo di armonie è molto “italiano”. Se ascolti le grandi arie dell´Opera o classici della canzone come “Senza fine” troverai molte similitudini.
Ho l´impressione poi che non hai avuto bisogno di vedere il film “Drive” per scoprire “Oh My Love” di Riz Ortolani. Ho ragione? A proposito ti è piaciuto quel film?
Hai ragione. Ho anche realizzato quella versione prima di aver visto quel film. Anzi mi sono pure un po’ incazzato. Pensavo di aver scoperto un tesoro nascosto (al di fuori dall´Italia naturalmente). Ma certo non posso dargli torto. È una canzone fantastica. Il film mi è piaciuto ma non mi ha fatto impazzire come a maggior parte delle persone che me ne hanno parlato. La musica lo ha reso speciale e secondo me era la cosa migliore. Molto di quel film lo si è già visto (e fatto meglio) nei film di Scorsese. Di nuovo, questi italiani!
L´ EP “Henry- The Infinite Desire of Heinrich Zeppelin Alfred Von Nullmeyer”è dedicato allo scrittore tedesco Arnold Stadler ed ispirato in particolare dal suo romanzo “Death and I, the two of us”.Ci puoi raccontare qualcosa a proposito?
Il romanzo racconta la storia di un giovane che vive in una zona rurale del sud della Germania. Cresce in una fattoria ma è troppo basso e debole per lavorarci così viene mandato a studiare all´università. Fa fatica ad integrarsi nella società o in una scena, si sente sempre inadeguato, sempre di qualche centimetro troppo basso per questo mondo. Smette di frequentare l´università perché è troppo pigro e sempre senza soldi. Così trova un “paparino” (l´Henry del titolo) che proviene da una famiglia ricca e si vanta di essere parte dell´alta società, di essere un intellettuale ed un poeta. Diventano dunque compagni finché Henry muore ed il giovane amante scopre che Henry già da molto tempo ha perso tutti i suoi soldi, da prima ancora di incontrarsi. La trama dunque racconta di un giovane a caccia di un eredità che viene ingannato da un impostore. Ma in realtà tratta delle solitudine e della paura di morire da soli.
La mortalità è un tema sul quale rifletti molto?
La mortalità è qualcosa a cui cerco di non pensare troppo anche se Heidegger (che è un altra importante figura in questo romanzo) ci dice di farlo. Vivere significa “avviarsi verso la morte”.
Ci sono altri autori che vorresti consigliare ai nostri lettori?
Due dei mie preferiti, anche loro fonte di ispirazione, sono Alexander Kluge e Thomas Bernhard. Sono sicuro che Bernhard è stato anche tradotto in italiano.
Il tuo lavoro come produttore (in team con Markus Ganter) ti ha portato di recente a collaborare con i rappers tedeschi Casper e Muso (DLSO è sicuramente l´unico sito musicale italiano che si occupa della scena hip hop tedesca, e ne siamo orgogliosi). In particolare la tua produzione per Casper è abbastanza impressionante. Sei, o sei mai stato, appassionato di hip hop?
Non sono mai stato un gran ascoltatore di hip hop. Praticamente sono arrivato ad interessarmici attraverso queste due produzioni (ed ora ho un sacco da recuperare). È strano che soprattutto dei rappers mi abbiano chiesto di produrli. Ma come dicevo prima, questo è proprio quello che trovo interessante. Uscire dalla “comfort zone”. Penso che sia quello che anche loro cercavano quando mi hanno interpellato. E non avere dei tipici produttori hip hop. Penso che questa combinazione abbia dato origine a due album molto interessanti e particolari.
Quale è stato il tuo approccio a quel genere e come è stato lavorare con dei rappers in confronto, ad esempio, al tuo lavoro di autore di colonne sonore?
Sono state le mie prime produzioni per altri artisti per cui non saprei proprio dire come questi siano diversi in confronto ad altri. Lavorano molto di più intorno alla loro performance di quanto non faccia di solito io. Tutta la competitività che c´è nell´hip hop era una cosa nuova ed un po’ inquietante per me. Il dissing è durissimo, soprattutto se cerchi di fare qualcosa di nuovo. Io non ce la farei a reggerlo. Per questo i rappers devono essere duri. L´hip hop é come una gigantesca rissa alle scuole superiori
Quali sono i tuoi progetti per il 2015?
Sto lavorando al nuovo album. Spero davvero sia pubblicato nel 2015. Forse lavorerò ad alcune colonne sonore. Vedremo come andrà. Ho imparato a non fare troppi progetti. Le cose poi si sviluppano in maniera completamente differente.
L´ultima domanda: dal momento che il 2014 sta per terminare, mi piacerebbe sapere quali sono stati i tuoi albums, libri e film degli scorsi dodici mesi.

-Straight to the point. Are the three EPs a way to let creative steam out for you, and I mean it in a freer way compared to what your last works (third album, soundtracks, productions) allowed? A way to go more towards extremes without a care compared to a focused approach?
It‘s possible. I think EPs are a great way to experiment. Like short films. But that‘s not really why I did it. I wanted to do these projects for a while, but I knew that they shouldn‘t be done as a full album, because none of it is the definite direction that Get Well Soon is heading. They‘re not a step forward as rather to the side. It‘s broadening the image, not developing it.
-The EPs are clearly distinct one from the other. The “rockist/guitar oriented” one, the literally inspired, most reflective and ethereal one, and the cover versions one in which you included a couple of soundtrack songs. In a way they seem to reflect also your main interests beside music, i.e. literature and cinema. Which one of the three art forms was the first one that got you fascinated you when you were younger?
I was always fascinated by cinema. I was never a great reader when I was young. Well, I‘m still not, when I see people reading 1000-page-books in a week. I could never do that. So I‘m definitely the film buff. Reading is more like a „professional“ thing. When I pick up a book, I plan to be inspired. It‘s nothing I do for distraction.
-You are not new to the cover versions thing too. Your radical reworking of “Born Slippy” was already included in your first album. How much of an omnivore music obsessive are you?
Beautifully put. I‘d like to think of myself as exactly that. I‘m always searching for new music. Classical, Folklore, Pop music. And I think I‘m even more open than I used to be. I can be fascinated by a song, a sound or an idea in any given context. A few years back I wouldn‘t have even touched some genres. But I guess that‘s a process of maturity. When you‘re young, you guard your „scene“ like the holy grail. Now, I think it‘s exciting to listen to everything and sometimes think that‘s much better than I thought, or much worse (that happens too). So: anything can happen with Get Well Soon.
-Talking about your fascination with cinema and soundtracks. I have the impression you started to experiment more directly in that direction after the release of your first album. Am I right? Was it because of the bigger ressources that you got to use?
Soundtracks have always been one of my main influences. Even on the first album I would say that film is omnipresent. Of course I did dive more into orchestral stuff afterwards and the fact that I had the facilities to do that was surely a reason for that. After I recorded the first album so minimalistic in my bedroom, I was really blown away by the fact that I can record an actual ensemble in studio. I really went to town with that Wall Of Sound. And the last album was the most film influenced of them all.
-Talking about that. Is not a mistery that you are a big fan of italian composers like Ennio Morricone and co. How did you get to discover their music and how big is your obsession for all things “italo”?
I listened to Morricone already when I was a kid. My mother gave the „Once upon a time in the west“ soundtrack to me – I think it was my very first record – and I still haven‘t got over it. It‘s still one of my favourites. And that got me into all the other great ones like Ortolani or Umiliani. I just love that sound. Bittersweet, tragic, over the top and humorous. Just my thing.
-The “Palermo Shooting”´s track “Busy Hope” is maybe the most “Morriconesque” of your repertoire. How did you get that kind of goosebumps factor that the music of the “maestro” never fails to transmit (I used to listen to that song on repeat years ago, expecially from 2´20´ on, goosebumps everytime!). Is there any secret magical chord progression that you can recommend to our most musically-inclined readers to get that kind of effect?
Thank you. And I guess I have to give the credit to the maestro. I know exactly what you mean with goosebump-harmonies. So obviously he influenced my understanding of harmonies. All I can say is that they‘re never too complicated and they‘re always very distinctive. A Morricone is a Morricone. It‘s a bit stupid to say here, but to me, the harmonies are very “italian“. If you listen to the great Opera Arias, the Belcanto songs or song classics like „Senza Fine“ you‘ll find a lot of similarities.
-I suspect that you didn’t need to watch the movie “Drive” to discover “Oh My Love” by Riz Ortolani. Am I right? And by the way, did you enjoy that film (as we did)?
You‘re right. I even did the version before I saw the film. I was even a bit pissed-off. I thought I found a hidden treasure (outside of Italy, of course). But I can‘t blame them for using the song. It‘s just brilliant. I liked the film, but I wasn‘t crazy about it like most people that told me about it. The music made it special and was the best thing about it, I thought. Most of the other stuff I‘ve seen before (and better) in Scorsese films. Again, these Italians!
-The “Henry…” EP is dedicated to the german writer Arnold Stadler, and inspired in particular by his novel “Death and I, the two of us”. Can you tell us more about it?
The novel is about a young guy from the rural area in southern Germany. He grows up on a farm, but he‘s too small and too weak for the farm work so he‘s sent to study at the university. He‘s always struggling to be part of society and of a scene, but he feels he‘s always a few centimeters too short for the world. He also never goes to university because he‘s too lazy and he‘s always out of money. So he finds a „sugar daddy“ (that‘s Henry) who derives from a grand traders family and claims to be a part of the high society, a intelectual and poet. So they‘re companions until Henry dies and the young guy finds out that Henry had lost all of his money a long time before the even met. So the plot is a legacy hunter is being fooled by a impostor. But really it is about the fear of being and dying alone.
-Is mortality a topic you reflect a lot about?
Mortality is something I try not to deal with too much, although Heidegger (who is also an important figure in this novel) tells us to. Living means „being towards death“.
-Are there any other authors that you would like to recommend to our readers?
Two others of my favorites, that I always find quite inspiring are Alexander Kluge and Thomas Bernhard. Bernhard, I‘m sure, has been translated to italian.
-Your work as a producer (in team with Markus Ganter) brought you to collaborate with the german rappers Casper and Muso (dlso.it is surelly the only italian musical site interested in the german hip hop scene, and we are proud of it). Your work for Casper is expecially impressive. Are you, or ever been, an hip hop fan at all?
I was never a big hip hop listener. Actually I got into hip hop through these productions (and now I have a lot to catch up). It‘s funny that especially rappers asked me to produce them. But as I said earlier, that‘s exactly what I find interesting. Going out of the comfort zone. I think, that‘s what they wanted too. Not to have classic hip hop producers. And I think that combination made for two very interesting and very different albums.
-How did you approach that genre and how was for you working with those rappers, comparing this for example to your work as a soundtrack composer?
It was the first times for me to work as a producer for other artists so I can‘t really say how rappers are different from others. They were way more eager about their performance than I normally am. This whole competitive thing in hip hop was very new and disturbing to me. You‘re being dissed so harshly, especially if you‘re trying something new. I couldn‘t deal with that. That‘s why rappers have to be that tough. The hip hop game is like a giant big break in high school.
-Which are your plans for 2015?
I‘m working on a new album. I really hope I can release it in 2015. Maybe I‘ll do a few film soundtracks. We‘ll see how it goes. I‘ve learned not to make too many plans. It always turns out completely different.
-The last question: as 2014 is going to end, we would like to know your favourite albums, books and movies of the year that was.
