In una conferenza stampa tenuta per l’uscita di 22, A Million, Justin Vernon ha rivelato l’origine del suono che permea il nuovo lavoro. Stando a quanto detto dalla mente dietro Bon Iver, tutto è nato da un loop creato con una drum machine Roland.
“I was feeling a lot of anxiety. The beat got me up and out of my seat and made me want to break it down. It was finished right when we made it and we had to sit on it for three years.”
Vernon ha aggiunto che il suono è “un po’ radicale” e questo cambiamento sta nella volontà di abbandonare “la tristezza” degli scorsi lavori.
“I think cracking things, making things that are bombastic and exciting and also new, and mashing things together, and explosiveness and shouting more, I think that was the zone.”
